The General Consul of the Republic of Belarus in Istanbul, Evgeniya Bortkevich, delivered remarks at the panel session titled “Diplomacy and Women: Representation and Global Equality.”
05.03.2026In her speech, E. Bortkevich informed the participants that, at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, 2026 has been declared the Year of the Woman in Belarus.
This decision reflects the consistent state policy aimed at strengthening the role of women in the socio-political, economic, and cultural life of the country. It was noted that the initiative of the Head of State has given additional impetus to comprehensive efforts to expand opportunities for women’s self-realization and to strengthen their status in society.

Women in Belarus constitute more than half of the country’s population and account for over 50 percent of those employed in the economy. E. Bortkevich emphasized that women are widely represented in public administration bodies, the parliament, the judicial system, and the diplomatic service. They also hold leadership positions in industry, the banking sector, education, and healthcare.

Special attention in the speech was given to the conditions created in Belarus for women’s professional development. The country implements state programs supporting employment and entrepreneurship, ensures access to education and healthcare, and maintains a well-developed system of social support for families, motherhood, and childhood.
The General Consul noted that the model formed in Belarus allows women to harmoniously combine professional activities with family responsibilities.

It was also emphasized that declaring 2026 the Year of the Woman is a logical continuation of the policy aimed at expanding women’s participation in decision-making processes and strengthening their leadership positions. The consistent and systematic approach of the state contributes to sustainable socio-economic development and the strengthening of human potential.

During the session, the importance of international cooperation and the exchange of best practices in promoting women in diplomacy and global governance was also highlighted.
E. Bortkevich noted Belarus’s readiness for open dialogue and constructive cooperation on issues related to ensuring equal opportunities for men and women.
